Arts with communities

“Creativity is contagious, pass it on.” Albert Einstein

We work in communities that are labelled “hard to reach” and harness their creative energies. This approach enables the development of artwork that can be used as a tool to start difficult conversations, raise awareness or find solutions. This could be: a call for action around social or political issues; tackling discrimination in local communities; or integrating and connecting people from different backgrounds.

Examples of how we can work with you

  • We bring together different communities in order to celebrate diversity through the arts.

  • We gather information about social issues from communities, collate these into eye-catching pieces and present them to commissioners, decision makers and politicians. See the picture above, which was created in coproduction with the Mental Health People's Parliament.

  • We raise awareness of an issue within specific communities through photography. See Short Black N Sides, where stigma around mental health in BME communities is challenged.

  • We work alongside our associates to deliver poetry slams and spoken word events. These have been successful with young people but can also be offered to staff as a team building or professional development opportunity.

  • We create publications, digital books, videos, online shows and exhibitions of work.

    Mental Health People's Parliament

The People’s Parliament is a strategic body led by MPs with recent lived experience of mental health difficulties. Its function is to hold decision makers to account for improvements in services and supports so that people who experience mental health difficulties can have an improved quality of life and be in greater control of their own mental wellbeing. The Parliament is located in the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, just outside Birmingham.

  • Safe places

The Safe Places scheme is based on the belief that everyone has the right to feel confident and safe going out in their local community. Lots of people feel unsafe at times in the local area; this might be because they have experienced crime or because they simply feel unsafe. For disabled people, older people and others who feel vulnerable this often means they don’t go out at all. The Safe Places scheme enables people to feel more confident, access their local areas more and know what to do.
